This year marks the 20th anniversary of StartGreen Capital. We began in 2006 as one of the first cleantech venture capital investors in the Netherlands. Since then, we have grown into an impact fund manager with approximately 30 impact investment experts and 8 partners. We manage over \u20ac700 million and invest through specialized funds in companies and projects within the energy transition, circular economy, and inclusive growth. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Our anniversary is a moment to reflect on what has changed over twenty years and what we have learned along the way. That experience also forms the foundation for further growth. Because the transitions we are working on are constantly evolving and continue to require appropriate financing. <\/p>\n

From pioneering to scaling up
\n<\/strong>When StartGreen began, impact investing was hardly a known concept. Many sustainable technologies and markets still had to prove themselves. Since then, sustainable energy has grown into a mature investment market, impact investing has become highly professionalized, and professional and institutional investors are increasingly focusing on investments that combine financial returns with social impact. <\/p>\n

Financing challenges have also changed. In addition to capital for innovation, more and more financing is needed to actually apply and scale up proven solutions. <\/p>\n

This development is reflected in StartGreen itself. Our activities grew from venture capital for sustainable innovations to a combination of venture capital and project finance. With venture capital, we invest in companies that develop and scale up new solutions. With project finance, we help to actually implement proven solutions. <\/p>\n

Twenty years of experience as a foundation for further growth
\n<\/strong>In practice, we still regularly see promising companies and projects struggling to find appropriate financing. For example, they may be too early-stage, too small, or too complex for regular financiers, or the risk, duration, and scale may not yet align well with what investors are looking for. <\/p>\n

Therefore, in the coming years, we will remain active with our two specialisms: venture capital and project finance. We continue to look for companies, projects, and market segments where opportunities exist for financial and social returns and where appropriate financing can make the difference. <\/span><\/p>\n

The next phase requires acceleration
\n<\/strong>The transitions in which we are active continue to develop. This brings new financing questions and investment opportunities. To bring solutions from innovation to large-scale application, various parties are needed. <\/p>\n

Entrepreneurs and project developers are the engine. They develop solutions, realize projects, and drive transitions. Professional and institutional investors are needed to make larger capital flows available. Governments can provide predictable long-term frameworks and deploy public capital strategically where private financiers cannot yet bear certain risks independently. <\/p>\n

Specialized funds, such as those of <\/span>StartGreen<\/span>, can understand risks, develop appropriate financing structures, and help open up new markets. In this way, capital can find its way more effectively to companies and projects that accelerate sustainable and social transitions.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/strong>In the interview with NAB, Laura and Coenraad talk about the origins of StartGreen, the development of impact investing, and the lessons they have learned along the way. They also discuss today’s challenges: from the staying power required for cleantech investments to the financing challenges for smaller projects and venture capital, and the role that institutional capital can play in financing transitions. <\/p>\n

They address, among other things, the financing needed after the initial innovation, the importance of long-term capital, and the different roles of venture capital and project finance in developing, applying, and scaling up solutions. <\/p>\n
