Energiefonds Overijssel finances energy storage system that reduces CO2 emissions by over 2 million kilograms per year.

To address fluctuations and congestion on the electricity grid in Overijssel, an innovative energy storage system is being built at the floating solar park on the Bomhofsplas in Zwolle. Through integration with the solar park, solar power is stored locally for use at a later time, contributing to a more stable and sustainable energy system. Energiefonds Overijssel, one of the funds under the management of StartGreen Capital, is (co-)financing this system. All contracts were signed in October 2024 and construction has since started.

Storage capacity that makes a difference

The floating solar park, which opened in 2020, generates 5.06 TJ of green electricity annually. This project, a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 11 MW power and 22 MWh storage, marks an important next step. The system not only ensures a better balance on the Overijssel electricity grid, but also ensures a more efficient use of green electricity. With the storage technology, solar energy can be saved during times of surplus and utilized during peaks in demand. This strengthens the electricity grid and enables further sustainability.

Parties involved

The EOS Bomhofsplas battery project is an initiative of Green Energy Storage (GES) and is made possible in part by energy supplier Greenchoice and financier Energiefonds Overijssel. The system is being installed by Privatis and connected to the solar park. The Bomhofsplas is a sand extraction site of the landowner, Dekker Groep, which supports the project. Local energy cooperative Blauwvinger Energie will be given the opportunity to become a co-owner in the future.

With this collaboration, an important step is being taken towards a future-proof energy supply in Overijssel.
