Construction company Tala from Broekland designs and builds sustainable houses from wood and other biobased materials. With their modular housing concepts, Tala not only contributes to making the construction industry more sustainable, but also offers a solution to the growing housing shortage. With financing of 4 million euros from Energiefonds Overijssel and Oost NL, the company can improve its current process and realize a new factory in Overijssel.

The construction industry still frequently uses materials such as concrete, brick, and steel. Their production causes high CO2 emissions. By building with wood and other sustainable and biobased (installation) materials such as flax, hemp, and bamboo, Tala contributes to climate goals. Furthermore, their modular concepts have a very long lifespan. Tala builds the modules in the factory and then installs them on-site. This ensures a significant reduction in CO2 emissions during construction. In addition, the homes are fully demountable and relocatable.

Expansion and improvement

Tala is using the financing from both funds to develop and improve the current production site. In addition, the organization will expand and make its internal processes more efficient. At the end of next year, Tala will use this financing to expand to a second production site in Overijssel to continue meeting the increasing demand for sustainable housing.

Expected impact

Tala expects to realize a total saving of 44,000 tons of CO2 over the next four years with this financing. According to the company, Tala’s biobased construction method ensures a saving of 135 tons of CO2 per single-family home. Additionally, the expansion will create approximately 70 FTE jobs in the province of Overijssel.

Suzanne Groen, Investment Manager Circular at Energiefonds Overijssel:

“A sharply rising housing shortage and a construction industry responsible for nearly 40% of global CO2 emissions make rigorous changes necessary. Tala works in a smart way on sustainable construction, circularity, and a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. For us as Energiefonds Overijssel, that is an important reason to support this initiative.”
